VAN NUYS >> Nearly 80 Los Angeles Police Department officers, several on horseback, answered the call to hand out toys at Hazeltine Elementary School Friday morning in Van Nuys.

The LAPD’s Metropolitan Division, G Platoon, visited the school’s auditorium to meet with excited children and spread holiday cheer.

Officers handed out baseball cards and stickers to students. About 30 to 40 parents also attended.

“I think it was an absolute success,” said Alexa Guzman, healthy start coordinator at Hazeltine Elementary School and event coordinator. “I really believe in promoting positive community policing.”

Officers also showed off a K-9 dog, let students check out a SWAT vehicle and read to students in classrooms.

“They stayed extra to go read to them,” Guzman said.

Los Angeles Unified School District Executive Director of Health and Human Services Erika Torres, Assemblyman Adrin Nazarian, D-Sherman Oaks and a representative for Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian also attended the event, Guzman said.
